There’s lots of things I love about vegetable gardening. Helping to reduce my carbon footprint. Lowering my household’s grocery bills. Ensuring that the produce my family consumes is fresh and free from harmful chemicals. Not to mention the calming and therapeutic benefits I experience from watching my efforts produce happy and healthy living organisms. I have dreams of cultivating a lush and productive garden on a small hobby farm. What’s keeping me from turning this dream into a reality? Living in cities where my only outdoor space is a 10 by 8 ft. concrete patio!

If you’re someone living in an apartment, condo, or house with little to no outdoor space, container gardening can offer you the opportunity to grow and harvest fresh produce. Urban gardening with containers is a fantastic way to bring nature into your piece of the city and grow your own food, even with limited space. A bonus is that, depending on the plant, containers can be brought indoors during the colder months to extend their growing and harvesting season. You're also not limited to only using traditional pots. If it can hold soil (or any other type of growing medium) then it has potential in your garden!

Tomatoes are a popular choice for container gardening, as they're versatile, super yummy, and relatively easy to grow. Choose compact or determinate varieties like 'Patio,' 'Tiny Tim,' or 'Tumbling Tom' for best results in containers.

Growing Conditions:

  • Soil: Use a high-quality, well-draining potting mix, ideally with added compost for extra nutrients.
  • Light: Tomatoes need 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
  • Water: Keep the soil evenly moist, avoiding both over- and under-watering.

Common Problems and Solutions:

  • Blossom end rot: Add calcium to the soil and ensure consistent watering to prevent this issue.
  • Pests: Use organic insecticides, sticky traps, or introduce beneficial insects to combat pests like aphids or whiteflies.

Container Ideas:

  • 5-gallon buckets with drainage holes
  • Fabric grow bags
  • Large, deep pots

2. Strawberries

Strawberries are not only sweet and delicious but also fun to grow in containers. Opt for everbearing or day-neutral varieties like 'Albion,' 'Seascape,' or 'Tristar' for a continuous harvest throughout the growing season.

Growing Conditions:

  • Soil: Use a well-draining, slightly acidic potting mix with added compost.
  • Light: Strawberries require 6-8 hours of sunlight per day.
  • Water: Keep the soil consistently moist, watering more frequently during hot weather.
  • Cold: Strawberries are a perennial and should be brought into a protected area away from frost and snow.

Common Problems and Solutions:
